so i’ve been thinking about maybe trying to get into the convention/print scene, and to try to get my art out there a bit more. however, those fields seem to be dominated by fanart, and i don’t really watch anime/cartoons anymore. i don’t consider myself a part of any fandom so coming up with…
Okay let me give you some advice on this. All you need to do to get into the fanart scene is figure out what shows are REALLY popular coming up and then watch like two episodes to get a gist of the characters and their designs. Just two. That’s an hour of your life. You can also just browse the tumblr tags for shows to figure out what characters act like, and google it to see the aura the show goes for.
For each season (Spring 2014, Summer 2014, Fall 2014, and Winter 2014 for this year as an example), you can look up a chart of the shows and google a few key ones to see how popular they are. Then just choose one you think you can draw really well and do a few pieces for it.
For this season, I would recommend getting a headstart on Dramatical Murder (lots of cute techy boys), Free!! (swimming boys), Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (remake of the old magical girls, and suits your style best), and Sword Art Online (RPGs and gaming- this season its about a shooter game). Those are the biggest hitting shows this season that will still sell art next summer.
Summer and winter anime, since they coincide with breaks for people here in America, tend to do a little better than Spring and Fall- but this isn’t always the case. Sometimes hard hitting shows happen during Spring or Fall. Its best to just keep an eye on tumblr for the fandom motions if you’re not watching stuff yourself.
For the future, I can definitely predict that Attack on Titan Season 2 will send the sales of those prints skyrocketing. They already sell pretty well, with the fandom being so huge. AoT is on Adult Swim now too, which makes it way easier to access. Getting a head start on prints for it would be a good idea.
And, while some artists ARE successful selling their Original Prints, they’ll do much better if they sit alongside fanart. I’ve seen booths with beautiful art completely swept under the rug because they had zero fanart, but if someone sees ONE print of something they know, they’ll feel way more comfortable coming over to take a look at everything.
Tl;dr I want you to draw Durarara!! Art by my opinion doesn’t matter because it won’t make you as much money. Popular shows will. Do your research and pretty much any anime print will sell! If you want to do fanart you might have to watch a few episodes though.
wow thank you for this! i realize i’m pretty out of touch with what series are popular at the moment, aside from what shows up on my dash, so i think you’re right about doing a little bit of research. i can honestly say that i have no interest in doing any AoT/SnK art, as i do not like the story or the char designs at all (sorry i know it’s popular but it’s just not for me). Sailor Moon, I think you’re right on there that it would suit my style. Some other people have suggested monster girls, which again I think would be super fun. Sword Art Online and Durarara I am not familiar with but I’ll check those out, thank you!
